This Saturday, over 330 school students from over 160 schools, will contest the State Final of the Rider Sportswear Victorian Schools Cycling Championships, held right in the heart of the city of Melbourne.
Contested on the same circuit as Stage 6 of the 2007 Jayco Herald Sun Tour, the students will ride on the 2.5km course around the Tom’s Block precinct – located on the edge of the Royal Botanical Gardens off St Kilda Rd – just hours before their professional counterparts.
The students qualified for the state final through one of 9 zone finals held across the state thorough the months of August and September. Students were separated into 4 age categories – U13, U15, U17 and U19 – and also in Novice and Racing sections, with the Racing being for any current competitive member of CycleSport Victoria.
Students who finished in the top 3 in their respective event received medals and qualified for the State Final, with the 1st placed students in each zone presented with a winners jersey, donated by Rider Sportswear.
In the racing category, numerous Victorian state representatives will line up including 07 Junior team members Jaron Gardiner, Alex Meyland and Josh Vicino in JM15, Natasha Langedyk in JW15, Gavin Sittampalam, Stuart Smith and George Sutton in JM17 and Kendelle Hodges and Shannon McCurley.
Senior team members Scott Sittampalam, Lisa Friend and Laine Hammond will line up in the J19 Racing category.
In the School category, Marion College of Ararat leads the way with 24 students into the State final, with Mercy Regional College in Camperdown in second with 13, Ballarat & Clarendon College with 11 and St Margaret’s School with 9. An overall school aggregate prize will be awarded for Best School.
VSCC Coordinator Luke Mason is excited by this year’s finalists. “We had some great racing at all zone finals, with a great spirit shown by all students.” he said.
“And now these kids get to ride on a professional circuit and in front of a big crowd. It will be such a great experience for them”. he added.
