3000m of elevation, a new residence and more summer time snow.
High altitude is defined as anything 2400m above sea level or higher, we be at 2996m so damn we high now!!
The second week of June was a week of weird weather, constantly chasing that extra millilitre of oxygen, repeats of Americas best dance crew, the real world, my super sweet sixteen, more training and of course 24 inch Pizzas.
The week started with our vacating of the residence we had inhabited for the past week in Boulder, packing the car ‘to full’ and heading for the hills. We moved up into the small Ski village of Breckenridge, nestled in a little niche pocket amongst the 14,000ft peaks of the Rockies 100 miles from Denver. We were joined by the boys from the RAK team and my coach Graham Seers, who flew in from Aus on at 3am Wednesday morning to a nice little snow storm which blasted us out on the bikes. They’re here for six weeks to train and race and learn to live away from home. And with the arrival of 7 more people it meant Tim and I moved out and got our own house, in a creepy building straight out of 80’s horror film The Shining.
My progress back into form is going well so far i think, it definitely helps when the guys you train with have only just arrived from sea level and have never been above 2000m in their lives and so I took full advantage of that, kicking em’ while there down and grabbing what moral I can from the suffering of others, even if it is likely the tables will be turned in a few days time. I am still in the box after three hours in the saddle however each day, slowly but surely, my legs are returning and my ass is disappearing. I am told, most days, that patience is a virtue, something we should all master. Patience is shit. I am struggling with the patience thing. I raced for the first time on Sunday to see what level I was at. I got dropped within the first 20minutes. Against guys I was going toe to toe with only 12 months earlier. Damn.
Anyway. America is proving, as always, to be an interesting and eventful place.
Good luck to the Drapac boys hitting Europe this week, pissed I am not there with you all, on the Pave with the fulls on.
P.S why is it still snowing?
